REVIEW: Ten Foot Henry in my Top Ten

3 / 22 / 163 / 24 / 16

Ten Foot Henry on First Ave SWA new restaurant has quietly opened up on the hippest section of First Avenue SW, with no sign except a small speech bubble on the door:  Ten Foot Henry.Ten Foot HenryWhich is weird, because Henry himself is not known for being discreet. Seen here, directing those in need to the loo, Henry is in all his usual ten-foot glory. But perhaps he’s been relegated to the hallway because he — ahem — would be an overbearing contrast with the subtle decor.

Ten Foot Henry interiorThe room is a relief from over-themed design that can sometimes overwhelm the ‘latest new place.’ Light and airy despite the lack of windows, a plethora of hanging plants allude to the freshness of what you’re about to eat.

Aja Lapointe, Ten Foot HenryAja Lapointe will happily take credit for the food (along with co-founder and executive chef Stephen Smee) but not for the plants. Those are firmly rooted under the green thumbs of Plant Terrariums, my succulent go-to in Inglewood, and Esme.Dining at the bar at Ten Foot HenryThe bar is a great spot for dining solo, but if you’re with friends, get ready to share.Salad and omelette at Ten Foot HenrysEven though the menu was full of intriguing food choices, I had gossip to get to. So I leapt at the lunch suggestion to let the restaurant make all the decisions. The low-priced option has a low-key name, “five plates for $19,” and today it started with the Henry Salad. The Henry kitchen has the rare talent of knowing how not to over-dress. The greens, served to share, were quickly followed with a mushroom omelette made with montasio cheese.

Lunch at Ten Foot HenryThe share plates kept on showing up. Charred broccoli with celery root soubise was next, then a bucatini that was the ultimate in al dente. Dessert is not pictured, because it was raw truffles, concocted from pure cocoa. We ate them too damn fast for photo evidence.

Lana Rogers, PR + ConsultingLunch was paired with a “friendly Valpolicella” (to quote our server, and I totally agree) and the lovely Lana Rogers. A toast to your new PR + Consulting company, Lana, and cheers to Ten Foot Henry, now part of my Calgary top ten restaurant list.Blue Besos

Home+Garden Show 2015 Preview

2 / 23 / 153 / 5 / 15

The Farmer's House in Marda LoopThe Home+Garden Show 2015 starts on Thursday. Even though it will be at the grande BMO Centre, they chose the peqeuno quaint new bistro of two former food truckers for the media preview. I’ve been meaning to get to Marda Loop to check out the Farmer’s House, so for me it was a cocktail party two-fer!Home+Garden Show Calgary media preview Inside, it wasn’t quite business as usual, with the stars of the upcoming Home+Garden Show blocking the counter. I’ll have to get back to the kitchen and general store for lunch, especially with this weirdly warm patio weather we’ve been having in Calgary.Heather Draper, The Heather CoMeanwhile, look who I bumped into around the corner! Home Show poster girl and interior designer extraordinare, Heather Draper. The bedding guru will be a featured speaker this weekend at the show. Spoiler alert:  she tells me she’s not into trends. She thinks people should be more confident with what they love. Yes! “I love that dress,” said Tiffany confidently. Black and white stripes are a staple that never gets old. Click here and you’ll see that Heather sticks with what she loves.Calgary Home+Garden Show media previewFurther in to the Farmer’s House (which is a charming maze of rooms in an actual house) it was blogger heaven. DIY stations so intense that conversation died down and drinks were ignored.Melissa Wagner, Interiors to InspireMelissa Wagner of Interiors to Inspire espoused the awesomeness of chalk paint, especially for garden furniture.Ryan Massel, aka Mr. FabulousTerrariums are a hot home trend right now and Ryan Massel, otherwise known as Calgary’s super blogger Mr. Fabulous, was digging it.Terrarium fixings from Blue GrassWith all the fixings provided by Blue Grass Nursery, even I couldn’t resist. My fishbowl is up front. Try it yourself this weekend. They’re hosting miniature garden workshops all four days of the show.Besos
